Wimbledon
(2004) Feature Film

Directed by
Richard Loncraine

Staring Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst

DESCRIPTION:
A feature length movie involving seamless integration of live action with 3D elements such as tennis balls.

TREATMENT/SOFTWARE USED:
Maya-Alias/Wavefront; for the modelling and animation. Renderman for the shaders and rendering. Photoshop and Matador; for textures. Shake for the compositing.

MY PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT:
I was the lead lighting TD at the previsualisation stage. I built the 3D tennis ball, created sophisticated shaders, involving multi-layered displacement maps to mimick the "fur' for the distant to mid-range shots (to save time in rendering). Fur was then applied for the close-up shots. Attention to details such as 'scuff' marks and dirt caught in the fur, allowed for a photo-realistic result.
